Fishing Jobs in Korea (E-9/EPS): The Honest 2026 Guide

114114AI ·
Key facts (2026)
  • Sector: Fishing (어업) — coastal fishing (vessels under 20 tons) and aquaculture under E-9.
  • Not the same as E-10: crew on vessels 20 tons and over / deep-sea seafaring is usually the E-10 visa (Seafarers Act), not E-9.
  • Hardest conditions: long hours, physical work, weather and sea risk — go in with open eyes.
  • Hours: fishing can fall under the Labor Standards Act Article 63 exemption (daytime overtime premium may not apply) — but minimum wage and the night-work premium (10pm–6am) still apply.
  • 2026 E-9 quota: fishing about 7,000 (set annually). Pay must meet the 2026 minimum wage (10,320 KRW/hour); safety is non-negotiable.

What is EPS fishing work?

EPS fishing places E-9 workers in coastal and near-shore fishing and aquaculture (fish/shellfish farms, seaweed). It is widely known as the toughest EPS sector: long, irregular hours dictated by tides and catch, heavy physical work, and exposure to weather and the sea. It can also pay well and lead to long-term status — but only go in if you understand the conditions.

E-9 fishing vs E-10 seafaring: which is which

If a recruiter is vague about whether the job is E-9 or E-10, get it in writing — they are different visas with different rules.

What the work is really like (be honest with yourself)

Expect very early or overnight starts, work timed to tides and weather, heavy lifting of nets and catch, cold and wet conditions, and periods at sea. Aquaculture is more land-adjacent but still physical. This sector has higher dropout and dispute rates precisely because people underestimate it. If you are prepared for hard physical work, it can be rewarding; if not, choose another sector.

Working hours and the Article 63 exemption

Like agriculture, fishing can fall under Article 63 of the Labor Standards Act, meaning the law’s daytime working-hour, break and holiday provisions — including the 1.5× daytime overtime premium — may not apply the same way. But the minimum wage, the night-work premium (10pm–6am, +50%), annual paid leave and severance still apply. Because hours at sea are long and irregular, understand this before you sign; it strongly affects your real earnings.

Wages in fishing

At least the 2026 minimum wage, 10,320 KRW/hour. Some fishing jobs pay well due to long hours or catch-based bonuses, but without a guaranteed overtime premium (Article 63) your monthly total depends entirely on the contract. Get the pay structure — hourly, hours expected, any bonus — in writing.

Safety at sea: the risk you must respect

Fishing is genuinely dangerous — slips, machinery, falls overboard, and weather. Insist on a life jacket and safety briefing; never work at sea in unsafe conditions to please an employer. You are covered by industrial accident insurance (산재) for injuries. If an employer pressures you into unsafe work or withholds safety gear, that is a violation — contact 1350 or a support centre.

Your rights

Minimum wage, industrial-accident cover, and the right to report abuse all apply — the Article 63 exemption does not remove them. Unpaid wages are recoverable via 1350. Isolation at sea can make abuse harder to escape, so keep your phone, documents and emergency contacts (1345 immigration, 1350 labour) accessible.

How to get selected

  1. Pass EPS-TOPIK and any physical/skills test (common in fishing).
  2. Indicate fishing as your sector — and confirm it is E-9, not E-10.
  3. Be selected by an employer from the roster.
  4. Get pay, hours and safety terms in writing before signing.

Is it dangerous?

Yes — it is the highest-risk EPS sector. Insist on safety gear and never work in unsafe conditions.

Can I earn a lot?

Sometimes, due to long hours or bonuses — but it depends entirely on the contract.

Does fishing lead to E-7-4?

It can qualify; check current points.

What if I am injured at sea?

Industrial accident insurance covers you; get treatment and apply to Comwel.

Can I change sector later?

Only under specific conditions and within limits.

Should I take a fishing job?

Only if you are ready for hard, risky physical work. If unsure, choose manufacturing or agriculture.
